“Soon we’re going to have more bits than atoms and bits are going to matter more than atoms,” said Keren Elazari (@K3R3N3), security researcher at Tel Aviv University, quoting Nicholas Negropante in his nearly 20-year-old book, Being Digital.

In our conversation at the Security BSides conference in Las Vegas, Elazari said the situation has actually evolved: “We have more bits controlling atoms (e.g., Internet of Things), and putting the atoms at risk than ever before.”

“Eighty four percent of Americans want something to be done with hacking,” said Dan Kaminsky (@dakami), chief scientist at White Ops Security, in our conversation at the 2015 Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas.

That’s amazing to Kaminsky who claims you can’t get 84 percent of Americans to agree on anything.

Companies don’t have the money or the educated staff to manage a seemingly endless array of point solutions, noted Justin Morehouse (@mascasa), founder and principal of GuidePoint Security, at their “Ask the Experts” party during the 2015 Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas.

“When an organization wants to embrace a new technology or a way of doing things, the first thing a security person says is ‘Whoa, let’s step back. Let’s be careful. Let’s think about this. There’s going to be security problems,’” said David Mortman (@mortman), chief security architect for Dell Software, in our conversation at Security BSides Las Vegas. 

“The entire tech industry over the last 20 years has collectively dropped the ball on security,” argued Daniel Riedel (@riedelinc), CEO of New Context, in our conversation at the 2015 Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas. “It’s an absolute disaster. We don’t work together. Engineers, and security professionals, and compliance, they simply don’t talk to each other. They continue to throw work over the fence hoping it’s someone else’s problem and not taking ownership.”
