Tenable Network Security Founder and CEO Ron Gula will discuss “Good and Bad Uses of Vulnerability Data.” Gula will also address how vulnerability data is often used to better qualify security events from network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) as well as security event managers (SEMs). However, there are subtle issues with how correlation can be implemented that incorrectly modified the severity of a detected security event. This talk will allow security operations analysts to make better use of their security event and vulnerability data. It will consider variations on the type of active vulnerability scans that can be performed, how frequent they should be performed and passive network monitoring to discover vulnerabilities in real time.
Gula is one of the leading experts in the fields of network and data security. He began his career while working at the National Security Agency conducting penetration tests of government networks and performing advanced vulnerability research. Prior to founding Tenable, Gula authored the original Dragon Intrusion Detection System.
Marcus Ranum, Chief Information Security Officer for Tenable, will present the opening Plenary KEYNOTE. Marcus will discuss "WHAT'S NEXT FOR INTRUSION DETECTION/PREVENTION?"
Marcus J. Ranum is a world-renowned expert on security system design and implementation and is a pioneer in creation of the technology of Information Security – from firewalls to intrusion detection and beyond. In the late 1980's he developed the first successful commercial firewall product, the DEC SEAL. When the Clinton administration decided to connect The White House to the Internet, Marcus designed, implemented, and managed whitehouse.gov, The President’s secure Email server. Based on the technology he developed for whitehouse.gov, Marcus implemented a second commercial firewall product, the Trusted Information Systems Gauntlet firewall, which at one point was the firewall market leader.
