The x86 emulator in Xen does not properly treat x86 NULL segments as unusable when accessing memory, which might allow local HVM guest users to gain privileges via vectors involving "unexpected" base/limit values.

  - CVE-2016-9385: x86 segment base write emulation lacked     canonical address checks, allowing a malicious guest     administrator to crash the host (bsc#1009104).

  - CVE-2016-9384: Guest 32-bit ELF symbol table load     leaking host data to unprivileged guest users     (bsc#1009105).

  - A double-fetch flaw exists that is triggered when the     compiler omits QEMU optimizations. A guest attacker can     exploit this to gain elevated privileges on the host.

  - A flaw exists in the hvm_task_switch() function in hvm.c     due to improper handling of x86 task switching to VM86     mode. A guest attacker can exploit this to cause a     denial of service condition or gain elevated privileges     within the guest environment. (CVE-2016-9382)

  - A flaw exists in the x86_emulate() function in     x86_emulate.c that allows a guest attacker to cause     changes to memory and thereby gain elevated privileges     on the host. (CVE-2016-9383)

  - A flaw exists that is triggered as unused bytes in     image metadata are not properly cleared during symbol     table loading. This may allow a guest attacker to     disclose potentially sensitive information from the     host. (CVE-2016-9384)

  - A flaw exists due to improper clearing of unused bytes     in image metadata during symbol table loading. A guest     attacker can exploit this to disclose sensitive     information from the host. (CVE-2016-9384)

  - A flaw exists in the x86 segment base write emulation     due to a lack of canonical address checks. A guest     attacker can exploit this issue to crash the host,     resulting in a denial of service condition.

  - A flaw exists in the x86 emulator due to improper     validation of the usability of segments when performing     memory accesses. A guest attacker can exploit this to     gain elevated privileges within the guest environment.
    (CVE-2016-9386)

  - CVE-2016-9383 (XSA-195)     George Dunlap of Citrix discovered that the Xen x86     64-bit bit test instruction emulation is broken. A     malicious guest can take advantage of this flaw to     modify arbitrary memory, allowing for arbitrary code     execution, denial of service (host crash), or     information leaks.

  - CVE-2016-9385 (XSA-193)     Andrew Cooper of Citrix discovered that Xen's x86     segment base write emulation lacks canonical address     checks. A malicious guest administrator can take     advantage of this flaw to crash the host, leading to a     denial of service.

  - CVE-2016-9386 (XSA-191)     Andrew Cooper of Citrix discovered that x86 null     segments are not always treated as unusable. An     unprivileged guest user program may be able to elevate     its privilege to that of the guest operating system.

The version of Citrix XenServer running on the remote host is missing a security hotfix. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities :

The Xen Project reports :

The Xen x86 emulator erroneously failed to consider the unusability of segments when performing memory accesses.

The intended behaviour is as follows: The user data segment (%ds, %es, %fs and %gs) selectors may be NULL in 32-bit to prevent access. In 64-bit, NULL has a special meaning for user segments, and there is no way of preventing access. However, in both 32-bit and 64-bit, a NULL LDT system segment is intended to prevent access.

On Intel hardware, loading a NULL selector zeros the base as well as most attributes, but sets the limit field to its largest possible value. On AMD hardware, loading a NULL selector zeros the attributes, leaving the stale base and limit intact.

Xen may erroneously permit the access using unexpected base/limit values.

Ability to exploit this vulnerability on Intel is easy, but on AMD depends in a complicated way on how the guest kernel manages LDTs.

An unprivileged guest user program may be able to elevate its privilege to that of the guest operating system.

LDTR, just like TR, is purely a protected mode facility. Hence even when switching to a VM86 mode task, LDTR loading needs to follow protected mode semantics. A malicious unprivileged guest process can crash or escalate its privilege to that of the guest operating system.

CVE-2016-9383 (XSA-195)

When Xen needs to emulate some instruction, to efficiently handle the emulation, the memory address and register operand are recalculated internally to Xen. In this process, the high bits of an intermediate expression were discarded, leading to both the memory location and the register operand being wrong. A malicious guest can modify arbitrary memory.

CVE-2016-9386 (XSA-191)

The Xen x86 emulator erroneously failed to consider the unusability of segments when performing memory accesses. An unprivileged guest user program may be able to elevate its privilege to that of the guest operating system.

For Debian 7 'Wheezy', these problems have been fixed in version 4.1.6.lts1-4. For Debian 8 'Jessie', these problems will be fixed shortly.
