Apache Tomcat 7.0.x < 7.0.73 JmxRemoteLifecycleListener Remote Code Execution

critical Web App Scanning Plugin ID 115730

Synopsis

Apache Tomcat 7.0.x < 7.0.73 JmxRemoteLifecycleListener Remote Code Execution

Description

According to its self-reported version number, the Apache Tomcat service running on the remote host is 6.0.x prior to 6.0.48, 7.0.x prior to 7.0.73, 8.0.x prior to 8.0.39, 8.5.x prior to 8.5.8 or 9.0.0.M1 prior to 9.0.0.M13. It is, therefore, affected by a remote code execution vulnerability in the JmxRemoteLifecycleListener due to it not being updated for consistency with the CVE-2016-3427 Oracle patch that affected credential types. If the listener is configured and JMX ports are reachable, an unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit this, via a specially crafted serialized Java object, to execute arbitrary code.

Note that the scanner has not attempted to exploit this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to Apache Tomcat version 7.0.73 or later.
