Apache Solr 8.6.0 < 9.10.1 Insufficient File-Access Checking in Core Creation

high Web App Scanning Plugin ID 115558

Synopsis

Apache Solr 8.6.0 < 9.10.1 Insufficient File-Access Checking in Core Creation

Description

Apache Solr versions 8.6.0 through 9.10.0 running in standalone mode are affected by insufficient parameter validation in the create-core API. When "allowPaths" is used to restrict file access, untrusted users able to reach the create-core API may cause Solr to probe and read disallowed paths, allowing cores to be created from unexpected configsets. On Windows systems with UNC paths enabled, this can also lead to the disclosure of NTLM hashes.

Note that the scanner has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update to Apache Solr version 9.10.1 or latest. Additionally, use the RuleBasedAuthorizationPlugin to prevent untrusted users from creating cores.
