ISC BIND 9.9.8 < 9.9.8-P2 / 9.10.3 < 9.10.3-P2 Socket Error Handling DoS

high Nessus Plugin ID 87503

Synopsis

The remote name server is affected by a denial of service vulnerability.

Description

According to its self-reported version number, the remote installation of BIND is affected by a denial of service vulnerability due to a race condition that occurs when handling socket errors. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit this to trigger an INSIST failure, resulting in a denial of service condition.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to BIND version 9.9.8-P2 / 9.9.8-S3 / 9.10.3-P2 or later.
Note that 9.9.8-S3 is a preview version of BIND provided exclusively to ISC Support customers.
