FreeBSD : rustls-ffi -- Read after free (4538886a-d1d9-11f1-8135-8447094a420f)

high Nessus Plugin ID 372883

Synopsis

The remote FreeBSD host is missing one or more security-related updates.

Description

The version of FreeBSD installed on the remote host is prior to tested version. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the 4538886a-d1d9-11f1-8135-8447094a420f advisory.

The RusTLS project reports:
functions retained a reference to the caller's server_name buffer after returning, rather than copying it.
The API documentation did not require the buffer to outlive the call and as a result if the caller freed or reused the buffer, later TLS processing read freed memory. [GHSA-rc3f-4j82-cmrg]

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the FreeBSD security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected packages.
