AlmaLinux 9.2 [TuxCare] Security Update: perl-Archive-Tar (ALMALINUX9.2:CLSA-2026:1786095908)

high Nessus Plugin ID 362242

Synopsis

The AlmaLinux host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The AlmaLinux 9.2 host has a package installed that is affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the TuxCare ALMALINUX9.2:CLSA-2026:1786095908 advisory.

- Archive::Tar versions before 3.10 for Perl allow memory exhaustion via attacker controlled entry size field in tar header. _read_tar() reads each entry's payload with $handle->read($$data, $block), where $block is derived from the entry's 12-byte size field in the tar header with no upper bound on that value.
A crafted header declaring a multi-gigabyte size causes Perl to allocate a scalar of that size.
(CVE-2026-9538)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected perl-Archive-Tar package based on the guidance in TuxCare advisory ALMALINUX9.2:CLSA-2026:1786095908.
