AlmaLinux 9.6 [TuxCare] Security Update: mrtg (ALMALINUX9.6:CLSA-2026:1788267640)

high Nessus Plugin ID 361416

Synopsis

The AlmaLinux host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The AlmaLinux 9.6 host has a package installed that is affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the TuxCare ALMALINUX9.6:CLSA-2026:1788267640 advisory.

- A flaw was found in MRTG. When the MRTG daemon is started as a root user and subsequently drops privileges, a local, low-privileged attacker can exploit a symbolic link (symlink) following vulnerability. By influencing or pre-placing a symlink in the process ID (PID) file path, the attacker can trick the root process into changing the ownership of an arbitrary existing file to the daemon user. This can lead to local privilege escalation, allowing unauthorized access to or modification of sensitive files. (CVE-2026-72694)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected mrtg package based on the guidance in TuxCare advisory ALMALINUX9.6:CLSA-2026:1788267640.
