Synopsis

Fortinet Firewall is affected by a privilege escalation.

Description

The version of Fortigate installed on the remote host is prior to tested version. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the FG-IR-25-173 advisory.

 - An incorrect privilege assignment vulnerability [CWE-266] in FortiOS Security Fabric version 7.6.0 through 7.6.2, 7.4.0 through 7.4.7, 7.2 all versions, 7.0 all versions, 6.4 all versions, may allow a remote authenticated attacker with high privileges to escalate their privileges to super-admin via registering the device to a malicious FortiManager. (CVE-2025-53744)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

For 6.4.x / 7.0.x / 7.2.x, see vendor advisory. For 7.4.x, upgrade to Fortigate version 7.4.8 or later. For 7.6.x, upgrade to Fortigate version 7.6.3 or later.
