NewStart CGSL MAIN 7.02 : shadow Vulnerability (NS-SA-2025-0198)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 242824

Synopsis

The remote NewStart CGSL host is affected by a vulnerability.

Description

The remote NewStart CGSL host, running version MAIN 7.02, has shadow packages installed that are affected by a vulnerability:

- A flaw was found in shadow-utils. When asking for a new password, shadow-utils asks the password twice. If the password fails on the second attempt, shadow-utils fails in cleaning the buffer used to store the first entry. This may allow an attacker with enough access to retrieve the password from the memory.
(CVE-2023-4641)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade the vulnerable CGSL shadow packages. Note that updated packages may not be available yet. Please contact ZTE for more information.
