ISC BIND 9.11.4-S1 < 9.16.37-S1 / 9.16.8-S1 < 9.16.37-S1 Assertion Failure (cve-2022-3488)

high Nessus Plugin ID 170683

Synopsis

The remote name server is affected by an assertion failure vulnerability vulnerability.

Description

The version of ISC BIND installed on the remote host is prior to tested version. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the cve-2022-3488 advisory.

- Processing of repeated responses to the same query, where both responses contain ECS pseudo-options, but where the first is broken in some way, can cause BIND to exit with an assertion failure. 'Broken' in this context is anything that would cause the resolver to reject the query response, such as a mismatch between query and answer name. This issue affects BIND 9 versions 9.11.4-S1 through 9.11.37-S1 and 9.16.8-S1 through 9.16.36-S1. (CVE-2022-3488)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to ISC BIND version 9.16.37-S1 or later.
