CVE-2011-1476: Specially crafted requests may be written to /dev/sequencer resulting in an underflow when calculating a size for a copy_from_user() operation in the driver for MIDI interfaces. On x86, this just returns an error, but it could have caused memory corruption on other architectures. Other malformed requests could have resulted in the use of uninitialized variables.

KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is a full virtualization solution for Linux on AMD64 and Intel 64 systems. KVM is a Linux kernel module built for the standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux kernel.

It was found that some structure padding and reserved fields in certain data structures in QEMU-KVM were not initialized properly before being copied to user-space. A privileged host user with access to '/dev/kvm' could use this flaw to leak kernel stack memory to user-space. (CVE-2010-3881)

* The 'kvm_amd' kernel module did not initialize the TSC (Time Stamp Counter) offset in the VMCB (Virtual Machine Control Block) correctly.
After a vCPU (virtual CPU) has been created, the TSC offset in the VMCB should have a negative value so that the virtual machine will see TSC values starting at zero. However, the TSC offset was set to zero and therefore the virtual machine saw the same TSC value as the host.
With this update, the TSC offset has been updated to show the correct values. (BZ#656984)

* Setting the boot settings of a virtual machine to, firstly, boot from PXE and, secondly, to boot from the hard drive would result in a PXE boot loop, that is, the virtual machine would not continue to boot from the hard drive if the PXE boot failed. This was caused by a flaw in the 'bochs-bios' (part of KVM) code. With this update, after a virtual machine tries to boot from PXE and fails, it continues to boot from a hard drive if there is one present. (BZ#659850)

* If a 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 virtual machine was migrated to another host with a different CPU clock speed, the clock of that virtual machine would consistently lose or gain time (approximately half a second for every second the host is running). On machines that do not use the kvm clock, the network time protocol daemon (ntpd) could correct the time drifts caused by migration.
However, using the pvclock caused the time to change consistently.
This was due to flaws in the save/load functions of pvclock. With this update, the issue has been fixed and migrating a virtual machine no longer causes time drift. (BZ#660239)

All KVM users should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain backported patches to correct these issues. Note: The procedure in the Solution section must be performed before this update will take effect.

Alan Cox discovered that the HCI UART driver did not correctly check if a write operation was available. If the mmap_min-addr sysctl was changed from the Ubuntu default to a value of 0, a local attacker could exploit this flaw to gain root privileges. (CVE-2010-4242)

It was discovered that multithreaded exec did not handle CPU timers correctly. A local attacker could exploit this to crash the system, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2010-4248)

Vegard Nossum discovered that memory garbage collection was not handled correctly for active sockets. A local attacker could exploit this to allocate all available kernel memory, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2010-4249)

Nelson Elhage discovered that the kernel did not correctly handle process cleanup after triggering a recoverable kernel bug. If a local attacker were able to trigger certain kinds of kernel bugs, they could create a specially crafted process to gain root privileges.

Kees Cook discovered that some ethtool functions did not correctly clear heap memory. A local attacker with CAP_NET_ADMIN privileges could exploit this to read portions of kernel heap memory, leading to a loss of privacy. (CVE-2010-4655)

Kees Cook discovered that the IOWarrior USB device driver did not correctly check certain size fields. A local attacker with physical access could plug in a specially crafted USB device to crash the system or potentially gain root privileges. (CVE-2010-4656)

Joel Becker discovered that OCFS2 did not correctly validate on-disk symlink structures. If an attacker were able to trick a user or automated system into mounting a specially crafted filesystem, it could crash the system or expose kernel memory, leading to a loss of privacy. (CVE-2010-NNN2)

A flaw was found in the kernel's Integrity Measurement Architecture (IMA). Changes made by an attacker might not be discovered by IMA, if SELinux was disabled, and a new IMA rule was loaded. (CVE-2011-0006)

Dan Carpenter discovered that the TTPCI DVB driver did not check certain values during an ioctl. If the dvb-ttpci module was loaded, a local attacker could exploit this to crash the system, leading to a denial of service, or possibly gain root privileges. (CVE-2011-0521)

Rafael Dominguez Vega discovered that the caiaq Native Instruments USB driver did not correctly validate string lengths. A local attacker with physical access could plug in a specially crafted USB device to crash the system or potentially gain root privileges. (CVE-2011-0712)

Timo Warns discovered that MAC partition parsing routines did not correctly calculate block counts. A local attacker with physical access could plug in a specially crafted block device to crash the system or potentially gain root privileges. (CVE-2011-1010)

Timo Warns discovered that LDM partition parsing routines did not correctly calculate block counts. A local attacker with physical access could plug in a specially crafted block device to crash the system, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2011-1012)

Nelson Elhage discovered that the epoll subsystem did not correctly handle certain structures. A local attacker could create malicious requests that would hang the system, leading to a denial of service.

Johan Hovold discovered that the DCCP network stack did not correctly handle certain packet combinations. A remote attacker could send specially crafted network traffic that would crash the system, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2011-1093).

Updated kernel packages that fix several security issues and three bugs are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 Extended Update Support.

The Red Hat Security Response Team has rated this update as having important security impact. Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base scores, which give detailed severity ratings, are available for each vulnerability from the CVE links in the References section.

The kernel packages contain the Linux kernel, the core of any Linux operating system.

This update includes backported fixes for security issues. These issues, except for CVE-2011-1182, only affected users of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 Extended Update Support as they have already been addressed for users of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 in the 6.1 update, RHSA-2011:0542.

* Buffer overflow flaws were found in the Linux kernel's Management Module Support for Message Passing Technology (MPT) based controllers.
A local, unprivileged user could use these flaws to cause a denial of service, an information leak, or escalate their privileges.

* A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's networking subsystem. If the number of packets received exceeded the receiver's buffer limit, they were queued in a backlog, consuming memory, instead of being discarded. * A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Transparent Huge Pages (THP) implementation. A local, unprivileged user could abuse this flaw to allow the user stack (when it is using huge pages) to grow and cause a denial of service. (CVE-2011-0999, Moderate)

* A flaw in the Linux kernel's Event Poll (epoll) implementation could allow a local, unprivileged user to cause a denial of service.

* An inconsistency was found in the interaction between the Linux kernel's method for allocating NFSv4 (Network File System version 4) ACL data and the method by which it was freed. This inconsistency led to a kernel panic which could be triggered by a local, unprivileged user with files owned by said user on an NFSv4 share. (CVE-2011-1090, Moderate)

* It was found that some structure padding and reserved fields in certain data structures in KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) were not initialized properly before being copied to user-space. A privileged host user with access to '/dev/kvm' could use this flaw to leak kernel stack memory to user-space. (CVE-2010-3881, Low)

* A missing validation check was found in the Linux kernel's mac_partition() implementation, used for supporting file systems created on Mac OS operating systems. A local attacker could use this flaw to cause a denial of service by mounting a disk that contains specially crafted partitions. (CVE-2011-1010, Low)

* A buffer overflow flaw in the DEC Alpha OSF partition implementation in the Linux kernel could allow a local attacker to cause an information leak by mounting a disk that contains specially crafted partition tables. (CVE-2011-1163, Low)

* Missing validations of null-terminated string data structure elements in the do_replace(), compat_do_replace(), do_ipt_get_ctl(), do_ip6t_get_ctl(), and do_arpt_get_ctl() functions could allow a local user who has the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability to cause an information leak. (CVE-2011-1170, CVE-2011-1171, CVE-2011-1172, Low)

* A missing validation check was found in the Linux kernel's signals implementation. A local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to send signals via the sigqueueinfo system call, with the si_code set to SI_TKILL and with spoofed process and user IDs, to other processes.
Note: This flaw does not allow existing permission checks to be bypassed; signals can only be sent if your privileges allow you to already do so. (CVE-2011-1182, Low)

  - kvm: arch/x86/kvm/x86.c: reading uninitialized stack memory (CVE-2010-3881)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

It was found that some structure padding and reserved fields in certain data structures in QEMU-KVM were not initialized properly before being copied to user-space. A privileged host user with access to '/dev/kvm' could use this flaw to leak kernel stack memory to user-space. (CVE-2010-3881)

This update also fixes the following bugs :

  - The 'kvm_amd' kernel module did not initialize the TSC     (Time Stamp Counter) offset in the VMCB (Virtual Machine     Control Block) correctly. After a vCPU (virtual CPU) has     been created, the TSC offset in the VMCB should have a     negative value so that the virtual machine will see TSC     values starting at zero. However, the TSC offset was set     to zero and therefore the virtual machine saw the same     TSC value as the host. With this update, the TSC offset     has been updated to show the correct values. (BZ#656984)

  - Setting the boot settings of a virtual machine to,     firstly, boot from PXE and, secondly, to boot from the     hard drive would result in a PXE boot loop, that is, the     virtual machine would not continue to boot from the hard     drive if the PXE boot failed. This was caused by a flaw     in the 'bochs-bios' (part of KVM) code. With this     update, after a virtual machine tries to boot from PXE     and fails, it continues to boot from a hard drive if     there is one present. (BZ#659850)

  - If a 64-bit Scientific Linux 5.5 virtual machine was     migrated to another host with a different CPU clock     speed, the clock of that virtual machine would     consistently lose or gain time (approximately half a     second for every second the host is running). On     machines that do not use the kvm clock, the network time     protocol daemon (ntpd) could correct the time drifts     caused by migration. However, using the pvclock caused     the time to change consistently. This was due to flaws     in the save/load functions of pvclock. With this update,     the issue has been fixed and migrating a virtual machine     no longer causes time drift. (BZ#660239)

The following procedure must be performed before this update will take effect :

1) Stop all KVM guest virtual machines.

2) Either reboot the hypervisor machine or, as the root user, remove (using 'modprobe -r [module]') and reload (using 'modprobe [module]') all of the following modules which are currently running (determined using 'lsmod'): kvm, ksm, kvm-intel or kvm-amd.

3) Restart the KVM guest virtual machines.

The SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 Service Pack 1 kernel was updated to 2.6.32.45 and fixes various bugs and security issues.

The following security issues have been fixed :

  - Timo Warns reported an issue in the Linux implementation     for GUID partitions. Users with physical access could     gain access to sensitive kernel memory by adding a     storage device with a specially crafted corrupted     invalid partition table. (CVE-2011-1776)

  - The second part of this fix was not yet applied to our     kernel: arch/x86/kvm/x86.c in the Linux kernel before     2.6.36.2 does not initialize certain structure members,     which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive     information from kernel stack memory via read operations     on the /dev/kvm device. (CVE-2010-3881)

  - The /proc/PID/io interface could be used by local     attackers to gain information on other processes like     number of password characters typed or similar.
    (CVE-2011-2495)

  - A small buffer overflow in the radio driver si4713-i2c     was fixed that could potentially used by local attackers     to crash the kernel or potentially execute code.
    (CVE-2011-2700)

  - A kernel information leak in the comedi driver from     kernel to userspace was fixed. (CVE-2011-2909)

  - In the perf framework software event overflows could     deadlock or delete an uninitialized timer.

It was discovered that KVM did not correctly initialize certain CPU registers. A local attacker could exploit this to crash the system, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2010-3698)

Timo Warns discovered that OSF partition parsing routines did not correctly clear memory. A local attacker with physical access could plug in a specially crafted block device to read kernel memory, leading to a loss of privacy. (CVE-2011-1163)

Dan Rosenberg discovered that MPT devices did not correctly validate certain values in ioctl calls. If these drivers were loaded, a local attacker could exploit this to read arbitrary kernel memory, leading to a loss of privacy. (CVE-2011-1494, CVE-2011-1495)

Tavis Ormandy discovered that the pidmap function did not correctly handle large requests. A local attacker could exploit this to crash the system, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2011-1593)

Oliver Hartkopp and Dave Jones discovered that the CAN network driver did not correctly validate certain socket structures. If this driver was loaded, a local attacker could crash the system, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2011-1598, CVE-2011-1748)

Vasiliy Kulikov discovered that the AGP driver did not check certain ioctl values. A local attacker with access to the video subsystem could exploit this to crash the system, leading to a denial of service, or possibly gain root privileges. (CVE-2011-1745, CVE-2011-2022)

Vasiliy Kulikov discovered that the AGP driver did not check the size of certain memory allocations. A local attacker with access to the video subsystem could exploit this to run the system out of memory, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2011-1746)

Dan Rosenberg reported an error in the old ABI compatibility layer of ARM kernels. A local attacker could exploit this flaw to cause a denial of service or gain root privileges. (CVE-2011-1759)

Dan Rosenberg discovered that the DCCP stack did not correctly handle certain packet structures. A remote attacker could exploit this to crash the system, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2011-1770)

Timo Warns discovered that the EFI GUID partition table was not correctly parsed. A physically local attacker that could insert mountable devices could exploit this to crash the system or possibly gain root privileges. (CVE-2011-1776)

Yogesh Sharma discovered that CIFS did not correctly handle UNCs that had no prefixpaths. A local attacker with access to a CIFS partition could exploit this to crash the system, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2011-3363).

Brad Spengler discovered that the kernel did not correctly account for userspace memory allocations during exec() calls. A local attacker could exploit this to consume all system memory, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2010-4243)

Vegard Nossum discovered that memory garbage collection was not handled correctly for active sockets. A local attacker could exploit this to allocate all available kernel memory, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2010-4249)

It was discovered that named pipes did not correctly handle certain fcntl calls. A local attacker could exploit this to crash the system, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2010-4256)

Nelson Elhage discovered that the kernel did not correctly handle process cleanup after triggering a recoverable kernel bug. If a local attacker were able to trigger certain kinds of kernel bugs, they could create a specially crafted process to gain root privileges.

The SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 Service Pack 1 kernel was updated to 2.6.32.27 and fixes various bugs and security issues.

  - A remote (or local) attacker communicating over X.25     could cause a kernel panic by attempting to negotiate     malformed facilities. (CVE-2010-4164)

  - A local attacker could cause memory overruns in the RDS     protocol stack, potentially crashing the kernel. So far     it is considered not to be exploitable. (CVE-2010-4175)

  - Use-after-free vulnerability in mm/mprotect.c in the     Linux kernel allwed local users to cause a denial of     service via vectors involving an mprotect system call.

  - By submitting certain I/O requests with 0 length, a     local user could have caused a kernel panic.

  - The ethtool_get_rxnfc function in net/core/ethtool.c in     the Linux kernel did not initialize a certain block of     heap memory, which allowed local users to obtain     potentially sensitive information via an     ETHTOOL_GRXCLSRLALL ethtool command with a large     info.rule_cnt value. (CVE-2010-3861)

  - arch/x86/kvm/x86.c in the Linux kernel did not     initialize certain structure members, which allowed     local users to obtain potentially sensitive information     from kernel stack memory via read operations on the     /dev/kvm device. (CVE-2010-3881)

  - A range checking overflow in pktcdvd ioctl was fixed.
