Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 Observable Discrepancy (CVE-2023-37482)

medium Tenable OT Security Plugin ID 505893

Synopsis

The remote OT asset is affected by a vulnerability.

Description

The webserver of several SIMATIC products is affected by a user enumeration vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to identify valid usernames. The login functionality of the web server in affected devices does not normalize the response times of login attempts. An unauthenticated remote attacker could exploit this side-channel information to distinguish between valid and invalid usernames.

This plugin only works with Tenable.ot.

Solution

Siemens has released new versions for the affected products and recommends users update to the latest versions. For the SIMATIC S7-1200 CPU family (incl. SIPLUS variants), update to V4.7 or later version.

As a general security measure, Siemens strongly recommends to protect network access to devices with appropriate mechanisms. In order to operate the devices in a protected IT environment, Siemens recommends to configure the environment according to Siemens' operational guidelines for Industrial Security, and to follow the recommendations in the product manuals.
