Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / 10.10 / 11.04 : mutt vulnerability (USN-1221-1)
Medium Nessus Plugin ID 56346
SynopsisThe remote Ubuntu host is missing one or more security-related patches.
DescriptionIt was discovered that mutt incorrectly verified the hostname in an SSL certificate. An attacker could trick mutt into trusting a rogue SMTPS, IMAPS, or POP3S server's certificate, which was signed by a trusted certificate authority, to perform a man-in-the-middle attack.
Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.
SolutionUpdate the affected mutt and / or mutt-patched packages.
