Ubuntu 16.04 LTS : feh vulnerability (USN-8982-1)

critical Nessus Plugin ID 375877

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security update.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 16.04 LTS host has a package installed that is affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-8982-1 advisory.

It was discovered that feh incorrectly handled certain IPC messages from a client pretending to be the Enlightenment window manager, leading to an integer overflow. An attacker could possibly use this issue to cause feh to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected feh package.
