Synopsis

The Microsoft Visual Studio installation on the remote host is affected by an elevation of privilege vulnerability.

Description

The version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed on the remote Windows host is missing a security update. It is, therefore, affected by an elevation of privilege vulnerability:

 - A buffer overflow in the Brotli decoder (c/dec/decode.c) in Google Brotli 1.0.3 through 1.2.0 allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to corrupt decoder state memory, disclose information, cause a denial of service, or potentially execute arbitrary code via a crafted Brotli-compressed stream. This affects Visual Studio 2017 15.9.x prior to 15.9.84, Visual Studio 2019 16.11.x prior to 16.11.61, Visual Studio 2022 17.14.x prior to 17.14.43, and Visual Studio 2026 18.x prior to 18.11.2. (CVE-2026-111497)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Microsoft has released the following security updates to address this issue:
 - Update to 15.9.84 for Visual Studio 2017 15.9
 - Update to 16.11.61 for Visual Studio 2019 16.11
 - Update to 17.14.43 for Visual Studio 2022 17.14
 - Update to 18.11.2 for Visual Studio 2026 18.11
