Amazon Linux 2 : ghostscript (ALAS-2026-4034)

critical Nessus Plugin ID 371757

Synopsis

The remote Amazon Linux 2 host is missing a security update.

Description

The version of ghostscript installed on the remote host is prior to 9.54.0-9. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the ALAS2-2026-4034 advisory.

A flaw was found in Ghostscript. When Ghostscript renders a crafted PostScript or EPS document, it can bypass the -dSAFER sandbox and execute arbitrary shell commands in the context of the Ghostscript process.
The issue chains memory corruption in document parsing with disabling of internal path access controls at runtime. An attacker can deliver the document directly or through formats that delegate rendering to Ghostscript (for example EPS import or print conversion workflows). Successful exploitation can compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data accessible to the process running Ghostscript.
(CVE-2026-101258)

A flaw was found in ghostscript. This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to trigger an application crash leading to a Denial of Service (DoS) or potentially execute arbitrary code by tricking a user or service into processing a specially crafted file. The issue stems from a stack-based buffer overflow in the pdfwrite component during Type 1 font processing. (CVE-2026-103226)

Ghostscript before 10.08.0 contains a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the JPEG 2000 output adapter (base/sjpx_openjpeg.c) that allows attackers to cause memory corruption by supplying a crafted PDF containing a JPEG 2000 image with mismatched component subsampling factors. When image components declare different subsampling values, the non-samescale sub-byte-depth output path allocates a row buffer sized for packed output but writes a full byte per output column regardless of bit depth, overflowing the allocation and corrupting internal chunk-allocator metadata to achieve code execution. (CVE-2026-39919)

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the tested product security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Run 'yum update ghostscript' or or 'yum update --advisory ALAS2-2026-4034' to update your system.
