Curl 7.69.1 < 8.23.0 SSH Known Hosts Validation Error

medium Nessus Plugin ID 371157

Synopsis

The remote host has a program that is affected by a host key validation vulnerability.

Description

The version of curl installed on the remote host is 7.69.1 prior to 8.23.0. It is, therefore, affected by a host key validation vulnerability:

- When libcurl uses libssh2 with a hashed known_hosts file, an unrelated initial entry can cause host key validation to report a key mismatch as a missing key to the CURLOPT_SSH_KEYFUNCTION callback. (CVE-2026-87865)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade Curl to version 8.23.0 or later.
