Curl 7.56.0 < 8.23.0 MIME Stack Overflow

high Nessus Plugin ID 371144

Synopsis

The remote host has a program that is affected by a stack overflow vulnerability.

Description

The version of curl installed on the remote host is 7.56.0 prior to 8.23.0. It is, therefore, affected by a stack overflow vulnerability:

- A deeply nested multipart MIME structure constructed via the public API causes a stack overflow in libcurl during normal cleanup operations. An excessive recursion depth within curl_mime_free leads to unbounded stack frame allocation during structure traversal, ultimately crashing the host process. (CVE-2026-92391)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade Curl to version 8.23.0 or later.
