CentOS Linux 6 [TuxCare] Security Update: shadow-utils (CENTOS6:CLSA-2026:1777947090)

critical Nessus Plugin ID 362130

Synopsis

The CentOS Linux host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The CentOS Linux 6 host has a package installed that is affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the TuxCare CENTOS6:CLSA-2026:1777947090 advisory.

- In shadow before 4.5, the newusers tool could be made to manipulate internal data structures in ways unintended by the authors. Malformed input may lead to crashes (with a buffer overflow or other memory corruption) or other unspecified behaviors. This crosses a privilege boundary in, for example, certain web-hosting environments in which a Control Panel allows an unprivileged user account to create subaccounts. (CVE-2017-12424)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected shadow-utils package based on the guidance in TuxCare advisory CENTOS6:CLSA-2026:1777947090.
