CentOS Linux 7 [TuxCare] Security Update: emacs / emacs-common / emacs-el / emacs-filesystem / emacs-nox / etc (CENTOS7:CLSA-2024:1728055873)

high Nessus Plugin ID 360914

Synopsis

The CentOS Linux host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The CentOS Linux 7 host has packages installed that are affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the TuxCare CENTOS7:CLSA-2024:1728055873 advisory.

- GNU Emacs through 28.2 allows attackers to execute commands via shell metacharacters in the name of a source-code file, because lib-src/etags.c uses the system C library function in its implementation of the ctags program. For example, a victim may use the ctags * command (suggested in the ctags documentation) in a situation where the current working directory has contents that depend on untrusted input.
(CVE-2022-45939)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected packages based on the guidance in TuxCare advisory CENTOS7:CLSA-2024:1728055873.
