CentOS Linux 7 [TuxCare] Security Update: cpio (CENTOS7:CLSA-2024:1712672449)

high Nessus Plugin ID 360546

Synopsis

The CentOS Linux host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The CentOS Linux 7 host has a package installed that is affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the TuxCare CENTOS7:CLSA-2024:1712672449 advisory.

- GNU cpio through 2.13 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted pattern file, because of a dstring.c ds_fgetstr integer overflow that triggers an out-of-bounds heap write. NOTE: it is unclear whether there are common cases where the pattern file, associated with the -E option, is untrusted data.
(CVE-2021-38185)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected cpio package based on the guidance in TuxCare advisory CENTOS7:CLSA-2024:1712672449.
