CentOS Linux 7 [TuxCare] Security Update: shadow-utils (CENTOS7:CLSA-2026:1779352627)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 360076

Synopsis

The CentOS Linux host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The CentOS Linux 7 host has a package installed that is affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the TuxCare CENTOS7:CLSA-2026:1779352627 advisory.

- A flaw was found in shadow-utils. When asking for a new password, shadow-utils asks the password twice. If the password fails on the second attempt, shadow-utils fails in cleaning the buffer used to store the first entry. This may allow an attacker with enough access to retrieve the password from the memory.
(CVE-2023-4641)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected shadow-utils package based on the guidance in TuxCare advisory CENTOS7:CLSA-2026:1779352627.
