Libheif 1.22.x < 1.23.2 Heap Buffer Overflow (macOS)

Synopsis

Libheif running on the remote host is affected by a heap buffer overflow vulnerability.

Description

According to its self-reported version, libheif on the remote host is 1.22.0 or later and prior to 1.23.2. It is, therefore, affected by a heap buffer overflow vulnerability. A crafted HEIC/HEIF/AVIF file using nested identity derivation (iden) and auxiliary (auxl) item references causes HeifPixelImage::scale_nearest_neighbor() to write 16-bit samples into an 8-bit Alpha plane allocation, resulting in an out-of-bounds heap write whose size and contents are attacker controlled. Any application calling heif_decode_image() is affected, with no special API options required.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to libheif version 1.23.2 or later.
