Unity Linux 20.1050e / 20.1060e / 20.1070e Security Update: emacs (UTSA-2022-000996)

high Nessus Plugin ID 345509

Synopsis

The Unity Linux host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The Unity Linux 20 host has a package installed that is affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the UTSA-2022-000996 advisory.

GNU Emacs through 28.2 allows attackers to execute commands via shell metacharacters in the name of a source-code file, because lib-src/etags.c uses the system C library function in its implementation of the ctags program. For example, a victim may use the ctags * command (suggested in the ctags documentation) in a situation where the current working directory has contents that depend on untrusted input.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Unity Linux security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected emacs package.
