Unity Linux 20.1050e / 20.1060e / 20.1070e Security Update: ctags (UTSA-2023-002841)

high Nessus Plugin ID 345507

Synopsis

The Unity Linux host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The Unity Linux 20 host has a package installed that is affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the UTSA-2023-002841 advisory.

A flaw was found in Exuberant Ctags in the way it handles the -o option. This option specifies the tag filename. A crafted tag filename specified in the command line or in the configuration file results in arbitrary command execution because the externalSortTags() in sort.c calls the system(3) function in an unsafe way.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Unity Linux security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected ctags package.
