Synopsis

An application installed on the remote Windows host is affected by a privilege escalation vulnerability.

Description

The version of Rockwell FactoryTalk Activation Manager installed on the remote Windows host is 5.02 or prior. It is, therefore, affected by a privilege escalation vulnerability. The security issue stems from custom actions in the installer that spawn visible console windows running with SYSTEM privileges during installation or repair operations.
An authenticated attacker with Windows credentials could hijack these console windows to obtain a SYSTEM-level command prompt, allowing full access to all files, processes, and system resources.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to Rockwell FactoryTalk Activation Manager version 5.03 or later.
