Erlang/OTP 23.2 < 27.3.4.15 / 28.0 < 28.5.0.4 / 29.0 < 29.0.4 Certificate Chain Cycle DoS (CVE-2026-58227)

high Nessus Plugin ID 331347

Synopsis

The remote host is missing a security update.

Description

The version of Erlang/OTP installed on the remote host is 23.2 prior to 27.3.4.15, 28.0 prior to 28.5.0.4, or 29.0 prior to 29.0.4. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability:

- The Erlang/OTP ssl application does not detect cycles when reconstructing an incomplete peer certificate chain during a TLS or DTLS handshake. When the peer supplies two mutually cross-signed certificates in unordered form, the issuer lookup recurses indefinitely, growing the call stack without bound. An unauthenticated remote attacker can send a crafted certificate chain to exhaust available memory and crash the BEAM node. (CVE-2026-58227)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to Erlang/OTP version 27.3.4.15, 28.5.0.4, or 29.0.4 or later.
