Vim < 9.2.0435 OS Command Injection (GHSA-hwg5-3cxw-wvvg)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 314673

Synopsis

The remote host is missing a security update.

Description

The version of Vim installed on the remote host is prior to 9.2.0435. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the GHSA-hwg5-3cxw-wvvg advisory.

- Vim's `:find` command-line completion feature is affected by an OS command injection vulnerability. When the `path` option contains backtick-enclosed shell commands, those commands execute during file name completion. Because `path` lacks the `P_SECURE` flag, an attacker can set it via modeline to execute arbitrary shell commands when a user opens an attacker-controlled file and triggers `:find` completion. (CVE-2026-44656)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to Vim version 9.2.0435 or later.
