Vim < 9.2.0202 Command Injection (GHSA-w5jw-f54h-x46c)

high Nessus Plugin ID 303793

Synopsis

The remote host is missing a security update.

Description

The version of Vim installed on the remote host is prior to 9.2.0202. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the GHSA-w5jw-f54h-x46c advisory.

- Vim is an open source, command line text editor. Prior to version 9.2.0202, Vim's glob() function on Unix-like systems, specifically the mch_expand_wildcards() function, constructs shell commands for wildcard expansion but fails to properly escape newline characters. An attacker can inject newlines in glob patterns to execute arbitrary shell commands, contingent on the user's shell configuration. This vulnerability is fixed in 9.2.0202. (CVE-2026-33412)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to Vim version 9.2.0202 or later.
