Ubuntu 5.10 : nbd vulnerability (USN-237-1)
Medium Nessus Plugin ID 20783
SynopsisThe remote Ubuntu host is missing one or more security-related patches.
DescriptionKurt Fitzner discovered that the NBD (network block device) server did not correctly verify the maximum size of request packets. By sending specially crafted large request packets, a remote attacker who is allowed to access the server could exploit this to execute arbitrary code with root privileges.
Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.
SolutionUpdate the affected nbd-client and / or nbd-server packages.
