Amazon Linux AMI : perl-Spreadsheet-ParseExcel (ALAS-2024-1905)

high Nessus Plugin ID 189394

Synopsis

The remote Amazon Linux AMI host is missing a security update.

Description

The version of perl-Spreadsheet-ParseExcel installed on the remote host is prior to 0.5900-5.3. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the ALAS-2024-1905 advisory.

- Spreadsheet::ParseExcel version 0.65 is a Perl module used for parsing Excel files.
Spreadsheet::ParseExcel is vulnerable to an arbitrary code execution (ACE) vulnerability due to passing unvalidated input from a file into a string-type eval. Specifically, the issue stems from the evaluation of Number format strings (not to be confused with printf-style format strings) within the Excel parsing logic. (CVE-2023-7101)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Run 'yum update perl-Spreadsheet-ParseExcel' to update your system.
