Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security update.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 16.04 ESM host has packages installed that are affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-4820-1 advisory.

- Directory traversal vulnerability in the setuid root helper binary in S-nail (later S-mailx) before 14.8.16 allows local users to write to arbitrary files and consequently gain root privileges via a .. (dot dot) in the randstr argument. (CVE-2017-5899)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected heirloom-mailx and / or s-nail packages.
