Ubuntu 16.04 ESM : iperf3 vulnerability (USN-4788-1)

critical Nessus Plugin ID 183553

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security update.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 16.04 ESM host has packages installed that are affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-4788-1 advisory.

- The parse_string function in cjson.c in the cJSON library mishandles UTF8/16 strings, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via a non-hex character in a JSON string, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow. (CVE-2016-4303)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected iperf3, libiperf-dev and / or libiperf0 packages.
