GLSA-202305-14 : uptimed: Root Privilege Escalation

high Nessus Plugin ID 175052

Description

The remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-202305-14 (uptimed: Root Privilege Escalation)

- uptimed before 0.4.6-r1 on Gentoo allows local users (with access to the uptimed user account) to gain root privileges by creating a hard link within the /var/spool/uptimed directory, because there is an unsafe chown -R call. (CVE-2020-36657)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

All uptimed users should upgrade to the latest version:

# emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose >=app-misc/uptimed-0.4.6-r1
