Apache Tomcat 8.5.x < 8.5.83 Request Smuggling Vulnerability

high Nessus Plugin ID 166807

Synopsis

The remote Apache Tomcat server is affected by a request smuggling vulnerability

Description

The version of Tomcat installed on the remote host is 8.5.x prior to 8.5.83. It is, therefore, affected by a request smuggling vulnerability as referenced in the fixed_in_apache_tomcat_8.5.83_security-8 advisory. If Tomcat was configured to ignore invalid HTTP headers via setting rejectIllegalHeader to false (the default), Tomcat did not reject a request containing an invalid Content-Length header making a request smuggling attack possible if Tomcat was located behind a reverse proxy that also failed to reject the request with the invalid header.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to Apache Tomcat version 8.5.83 or later.
