Ubuntu 18.04 LTS : Checkmk vulnerabilities (USN-5527-1)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 163287

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 18.04 LTS host has packages installed that are affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the USN-5527-1 advisory.

- A cross site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in Check_MK versions 1.4.0x prior to 1.4.0p6, allowing an unauthenticated remote attacker to inject arbitrary HTML or JavaScript via the _username parameter when attempting authentication to webapi.py, which is returned unencoded with content type text/html.
(CVE-2017-9781)

- Check_MK before 1.2.8p26 mishandles certain errors within the failed-login save feature because of a race condition, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive user information by reading a GUI crash report. (CVE-2017-14955)

- The CheckMK management web console (versions 1.5.0 to 2.0.0) does not sanitise user input in various parameters of the WATO module. This allows an attacker to open a backdoor on the device with HTML content and interpreted by the browser (such as JavaScript or other client-side scripts), the XSS payload will be triggered when the user accesses some specific sections of the application. In the same sense a very dangerous potential way would be when an attacker who has the monitor role (not administrator) manages to get a stored XSS to steal the secretAutomation (for the use of the API in administrator mode) and thus be able to create another administrator user who has high privileges on the CheckMK monitoring web console.
Another way is that persistent XSS allows an attacker to modify the displayed content or change the victim's information. Successful exploitation requires access to the web management interface, either with valid credentials or with a hijacked session. (CVE-2021-36563)

- CheckMK Raw Edition software (versions 1.5.0 to 1.6.0) does not sanitise the input of a web service parameter that is in an unauthenticated zone. This Reflected XSS allows an attacker to open a backdoor on the device with HTML content and interpreted by the browser (such as JavaScript or other client-side scripts) or to steal the session cookies of a user who has previously authenticated via a man in the middle. Successful exploitation requires access to the web service resource without authentication.
(CVE-2021-40906)

- Checkmk <=2.0.0p19 Fixed in 2.0.0p20 and Checkmk <=1.6.0p27 Fixed in 1.6.0p28 are affected by a Cross Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. The Alias of a site was not properly escaped when shown as condition for notifications. (CVE-2022-24565)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected packages.
