Ubuntu 18.04 LTS / 20.04 LTS / 22.04 LTS : cloud-init vulnerability (USN-5496-1)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 162614

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security update.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 18.04 LTS / 20.04 LTS / 22.04 LTS host has a package installed that is affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-5496-1 advisory.

Mike Stroyan discovered that cloud-init could log password hashes when reporting schema failures. An attacker with access to these logs could potentially use this to gain user credentials.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected cloud-init package.
