Ubuntu 18.04 LTS / 20.04 LTS / 22.04 LTS : Intel Microcode vulnerabilities (USN-5486-1)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 162404

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 18.04 LTS / 20.04 LTS / 21.10 / 22.04 LTS host has a package installed that is affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the USN-5486-1 advisory.

- Insufficient control flow management in some Intel(R) Processors may allow an authenticated user to potentially enable a denial of service via local access. (CVE-2021-0127)

- Improper initialization of shared resources in some Intel(R) Processors may allow an authenticated user to potentially enable information disclosure via local access. (CVE-2021-0145)

- Hardware allows activation of test or debug logic at runtime for some Intel(R) processors which may allow an unauthenticated user to potentially enable escalation of privilege via physical access. (CVE-2021-0146)

- Improper access control for some 3rd Generation Intel(R) Xeon(R) Scalable Processors before BIOS version MR7, may allow a local attacker to potentially enable information disclosure via local access.
(CVE-2021-33117)

- Out of bounds read under complex microarchitectural condition in memory subsystem for some Intel Atom(R) Processors may allow authenticated user to potentially enable information disclosure or cause denial of service via network access. (CVE-2021-33120)

- Incomplete cleanup of multi-core shared buffers for some Intel(R) Processors may allow an authenticated user to potentially enable information disclosure via local access. (CVE-2022-21123)

- Incomplete cleanup in specific special register read operations for some Intel(R) Processors may allow an authenticated user to potentially enable information disclosure via local access. (CVE-2022-21127)

- Processor optimization removal or modification of security-critical code for some Intel(R) Processors may allow an authenticated user to potentially enable information disclosure via local access.
(CVE-2022-21151)

- Incomplete cleanup in specific special register write operations for some Intel(R) Processors may allow an authenticated user to potentially enable information disclosure via local access. (CVE-2022-21166)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected intel-microcode package.
