Ubuntu 20.04 LTS : containerd regression (USN-5311-2)

high Nessus Plugin ID 161245

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security update.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 20.04 LTS host has packages installed that are affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-5311-2 advisory.

USN-5311-1 released updates for contained. Unfortunately, a subsequent update reverted the fix for this CVE by mistake. This update corrects the problem.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Original advisory details:

It was discovered that containerd allows attackers to gain access to read-

only copies of arbitrary files and directories on the host via a specially-

crafted image configuration. An attacker could possibly use this issue to

obtain sensitive information.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected containerd and / or golang-github-containerd-containerd-dev packages.
