Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio Code Remote WSL Extension (December 2021)

critical Nessus Plugin ID 156113

Synopsis

The remote host has an application installed that is missing a security update.

Description

The Microsoft Visual Studio Code Remote Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) extension is prior to version 0.63.11. It is, therefore, affected by a remote code execution vulnerability. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit this to execute arbitrary code on the system with privileges of the victim.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the Microsoft Visual Studio Code Remote WSL extension to version 0.63.11 or later.
