Synopsis

A web browser installed on the remote macOS or Mac OS X host is affected by multiple vulnerabilities.

Description

The version of Firefox ESR installed on the remote macOS or Mac OS X host is prior to 78.14. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the mfsa2021-39 advisory.

- When delegating navigations to the operating system, Firefox would accept the `mk` scheme which might allow attackers to launch pages and execute scripts in Internet Explorer in unprivileged mode. This bug only affects Firefox for Windows. Other operating systems are unaffected. (CVE-2021-38492)

- Mozilla developers Tyson Smith and Gabriele Svelto reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 91 and Firefox ESR 78.13. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. (CVE-2021-38493)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to Mozilla Firefox ESR version 78.14 or later.
