F5 Networks BIG-IP : NTP vulnerabilities (K55376430)

high Nessus Plugin ID 145255

Synopsis

The remote device is missing a vendor-supplied security patch.

Description

The version of F5 Networks BIG-IP installed on the remote host is prior to 11.6.5.3 / 12.1.5.3 / 13.1.3.6 / 14.1.4 / 15.1.2.1 / 16.0.1.1 / 16.1.0. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the K55376430 advisory.

Thentpdin the network time protocol (NTP) before 4.2.8p14, and in 4.3.x before 4.3.100, allows remote attackers to cause a denial-of-service (DoS), either daemon exit or system time change, by predicting transmit timestamps for use in spoofed packets. The victim must be relying on unauthenticated IPv4 time sources. There must be an off-path attacker who can query time from the victim'sntpdinstance.(CVE-2020-13817)ImpactAn attacker who can send a large number of packets with the spoofed IPv4 address of the upstream server can use this flaw to modify the victim's clock by a limited amount or causentpdto exit.BIG-IPYour BIG-IP system is affected only when you configure it as an NTP server, and sources for the BIG-IP system's time are unreliable, unauthenticated, upstream NTP servers.BIG-IQThe BIG-IQ system is not directly affected by this vulnerability, but it inherits the vulnerability from the BIG-IP system.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the F5 Networks BIG-IP security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to one of the non-vulnerable versions listed in the F5 Solution K55376430.
