Mozilla Thunderbird < 78.5.1

high Nessus Plugin ID 143426

Synopsis

A mail client installed on the remote Windows host is affected by a vulnerability.

Description

The version of Thunderbird installed on the remote Windows host is prior to 78.5.1. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the mfsa2020-53 advisory.

- When reading SMTP server status codes, Thunderbird writes an integer value to a position on the stack that is intended to contain just one byte. Depending on processor architecture and stack layout, this leads to stack corruption that may be exploitable. (CVE-2020-26970)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to Mozilla Thunderbird version 78.5.1 or later.
