Ubuntu 20.10 : c-ares vulnerability (USN-4638-1)

high Nessus Plugin ID 143120

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security update.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 20.10 host has packages installed that are affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-4638-1 advisory.

- A Node.js application that allows an attacker to trigger a DNS request for a host of their choice could trigger a Denial of Service in versions < 15.2.1, < 14.15.1, and < 12.19.1 by getting the application to resolve a DNS record with a larger number of responses. This is fixed in 15.2.1, 14.15.1, and 12.19.1.
(CVE-2020-8277)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected libc-ares-dev and / or libc-ares2 packages.
