VMSA-2020-0023 : VMware ESXi, Workstation, Fusion and NSX-T updates address multiple security vulnerabilities

critical Nessus Plugin ID 141757
New! Plugin Severity Now Using CVSS v3

The calculated severity for Plugins has been updated to use CVSS v3 by default. Plugins that do not have a CVSS v3 score will fall back to CVSS v2 for calculating severity. Severity display preferences can be toggled in the settings dropdown.

Synopsis

The remote VMware ESXi host is missing one or more security-related patches.

Description

a. ESXi OpenSLP remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2020-3992)

OpenSLP as used in ESXi has a use-after-free issue. A malicious actor residing in the management network who has access to port 427 on an ESXi machine may be able to trigger a use-after-free in the OpenSLP service resulting in remote code execution.

c. TOCTOU out-of-bounds read vulnerability (CVE-2020-3981)

VMware ESXi contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability due to a time-of-check time-of-use issue in ACPI device. A malicious actor with administrative access to a virtual machine may be able to exploit this issue to leak memory from the vmx process.

d. TOCTOU out-of-bounds write vulnerability (CVE-2020-3982)

VMware ESXi contains an out-of-bounds write vulnerability due to a time-of-check time-of-use issue in ACPI device. A malicious actor with administrative access to a virtual machine may be able to exploit this vulnerability to crash the virtual machine's vmx process or corrupt hypervisors memory heap.

f. VMCI host driver memory leak vulnerability (CVE-2020-3995)

The VMCI host drivers used by VMware hypervisors contain a memory leak vulnerability. A malicious actor with access to a virtual machine may be able to trigger a memory leak issue resulting in memory resource exhaustion on the hypervisor if the attack is sustained for extended periods of time.

Solution

Apply the missing patches.
