IBM WebSphere Application Server 8.0.0.x < 8.0.0.15 / 8.5.x < 8.5.5.13 / 9.0.x < 9.0.0.7 RCE (CVE-2016-1000031)

critical Nessus Plugin ID 141564

Synopsis

The remote web application server is affected by a remote code execution vulnerability

Description

The IBM WebSphere Application Server running on the remote host is version 8.0.0.x prior to 8.0.0.15, 8.5.0.x prior to 8.5.5.13 or 9.0.x prior to 9.0.0.7. It is, therefore, affected by a remote code execution vulnerability due to improper deserialization of untrusted data in the DiskFileItem class of the FileUpload library in the Apache Commons FileUpload subcomponent. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit this to execute arbitrary code under the context of the current process.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to IBM WebSphere Application Server 8.0.0.15, 8.5.5.13, 9.0.0.7, or later. Alternatively, upgrade to the minimal fix pack levels required by the interim fix and then apply Interim Fix PI90804.
