VMware Fusion 11.x < 11.5.7 Privilege Escalation (VMSA-2020-0020)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 140771

Synopsis

A virtualization application installed on the remote macOS or Mac OS X host is affected by a privilege escalation vulnerability.

Description

The version of VMware Fusion installed on the remote macOS or Mac OS X host is 11.x. It is, therefore, affected by a privilege escalation vulnerability due to the way it allows configuring the system wide path. An authenticated, local attacker with normal user privileges can exploit this issue to trick an admin user into executing malicious code on the system where Fusion is installed.

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update to VMware Fusion 11.5.7 or later.
