Python DLL Loading Local Privilege Escalation

high Nessus Plugin ID 139240

Synopsis

The remote host has an application installed that is affected by an elevation of privilege vulnerability.

Description

The version of Python installed on the remote Windows host is 3.6.x prior to 3.6.12, 3.7.x prior to 3.7.9, 3.8.x prior to 3.8.4, or 3.9.x prior to 3.9.0b5. It is, therefore, affected by an elevation of privilege vulnerability. A Trojan horse python3.dll might be used in cases where CPython is embedded in a native application. This occurs because python3X.dll may use an invalid search path for python3.dll loading (after Py_SetPath has been used).

Solution

Upgrade to Python 3.6.12, 3.7.9, 3.8.4, 3.9.0b5 or later.
